Since Halloween is my favorite holiday, I love to dive into the season. Watching horror movies, listening to a lot of gothic rock, and wearing more of my Halloween-esque jewelry are some ways I like to enjoy the season. I thought it would be fun to also share some spooky art that I like. Sometimes it’s nice to have things sorted into a list to make it easier to keep track of some of my current favorites. I don’t know a ton about art, like styles and skill and all, so this is mostly going off of what looks cool to me. Anyway, here’s a not exhaustive and incomplete list of some art I really like right now. Since I’m just doing a top 5 for now, leave more recommendations in the comments!
In no specific order:
Art by Peter Ondreička
I had this painting saved on Pinterest:
He also has a lot of other cool paintings that have an eerie vibe:
I like the really specific color scheme and the unnerving way he paints people. He definitely has a very particular style.
Zodiac series from cogum3li on instagram.
I love this one specific series in which this artists draws the zodiac signs. I wont paste all 12 in here, but I’ll add some of my favorites (with Libra first because I’m a libra and it’s our season right now).
All of their art is really cool, but I especially loved this set. The way they tie their style, the archetypes of the signs, and horror is sick. Definitely check out their page, especially if your sign wasn’t included.
The work of Zdzisław Beksiński
This Polish artist is known for his nightmare-ish artwork. All of the following paintings are from this article that shows off his work.
I like the variety in the types of paintings he creates and the surreal elements he uses. The creatures he comes up with are haunting. It kind of reminds me of something that would come out of a sinister video game in the early 2000’s, like Silent Hill.
Pulp art from Margaret Brundage
I love vintage pulp horror art, and this specific artist was the most popular female pulp artist.
Pieces from Goya’s The Witches and Old Women Album
I think you can tell from the title what makes this have a Halloween-like characteristic. I love Goya’s style, and this specific collection of art is perfect for this article.
The paintings just have this ghostly vibe, although some really are just old women. The witchy ones, though, stand out to me for putting into this list.
That’s all I’ll put for now to avoid this being absurdly long, but obviously there’s tons and tons of artists that can be added to the list. This is just some art I’ve saved or noticed recently that has an eerie, Halloween quality. Like I said before, please add to my list! I just wanted to throw out some ideas that people may not have known about despite their popularity.
My favorite is the polish artist & the vintage thanks for sharing
Absolutely haunting! Beksinski’s work really reminds me of imagery from Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”, beautiful and unsettling at the same time. That sentiment could go for any of these though lol
